Ayodhya
The Birthplace of Rama
Ancient temple spires, the sacred Saryu at dawn, and a city rebuilt around the return of its own legend.
The City Rama Called Home
Ayodhya sits on the banks of the Saryu river in Uttar Pradesh, and by tradition is the birthplace of Lord Rama — one of the most revered sites in all of Hinduism. What was once a quiet temple town has, in recent years, been rebuilt around the new Ram Mandir, drawing pilgrims from across the country to walk streets that appear in the Ramayana itself.
Mornings begin with the sound of temple bells rolling across the ghats of Ram ki Paidi; evenings close with an aarti on the Saryu that rivals anything on the Ganges. Between the two, there's Hanuman Garhi's 76 steps, the golden interiors of Kanak Bhawan, and lanes thick with prasad shops and marigold garlands. Locals simply call it what scripture always has: Ram Nagri — the city of Rama.
