Banaras
The City of Light
Ancient ghats, temple bells and the Ganga at dawn — older than history itself, and still very much alive.
The Oldest Living City
Banaras — also called Varanasi and Kashi — sits on the western bank of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, and claims to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth. Nearly ninety ghats line the river, each with its own name and story, and above them rise temple spires, narrow lanes and centuries of daily ritual that have never really stopped.
Mornings here begin with boats gliding past bathers and priests at the water's edge; evenings end with the fire and chant of the Ganga Aarti. In between, there's Banarasi silk in every shop window, kachori and thick lassi in every lane, and Sarnath — where the Buddha gave his first sermon — a short ride away. Locals simply call it what it has always been: the City of Light.
Places Worth Exploring
Banaras isn't seen in one sitting — it's ghats by morning, temples by afternoon, and fire by the river at dusk.
